No matter what safety measures are put in place on a track to protect the riders, sometimes things happen that are unforeseeable and unavoidable. Case in point: The first lap of the second round of the CEV European Moto2 Championship race at Motorland Aragon in Spain.
A dramatic pileup crash took place when Xavi Cardelus got into a nasty wobble as his rear tire lost grip exiting a turn, eventually spitting him off as his bike started tumbling. It managed to tumble back onto the track, directly in front of a chasing pack of riders who had nowhere to go. The fuel tank came off his motorcycle and rolled into the path of one rider who ran it over, resulting in a huge fireball explosion. Several pilots had to drive through the flames, with both American rider Michael Aquino (younger brother of the late AMA and BSB racer Tommy Aquino) and Jacopo Cretaro crashing into the bike and falling spectacularly. All three riders were treated at trackside but thankfully (and miraculously) no one suffered serious injuries.
